We are delighted to announce that Amanda Whittaker, a PhD candidate in the Department of History at the University of Toronto, is the recipient of the Marta Danylewycz Memorial Fund award for 2021. Whittaker’s doctoral project, entitled Food Scripts: Emotional Transnationalism and Migrant Life Stories in Montreal, Quebec, focuses on the experiences of migrants who arrived in Montreal in the post-1960 period. Using oral histories, her work explores the emotional dimensions of food and cuisine and in doing so helps us to better understand the experience of migration. Whittaker’s work, like Marta Danylewycz’s, is rooted in feminist analysis of women’s lives. Maintaining foodways was an important way for migrant women to maintain connections to their homelands, but it was also work that added to women’s struggle with the rupture of migration. Her work asks: How were cultural and culinary practices disrupted by migration and what kind of domestic and gender negotiations occurred post-migration? We look forward to learning from her innovative project.

Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer qu’Amanda Whittaker, candidate au doctorat au département d’histoire de l’Université de Toronto, est la récipiendaire de la bourse du Fonds commémoratif Marta Danylewycz pour 2021. Le projet de doctorat de Whittaker, intitulé Food Scripts : Emotional Transnationalism and Migrant Life Stories in Montreal, Quebec, porte sur les expériences des migrant.e.s qui sont arrivé.e.s à Montréal après 1960. À l’aide d’histoires orales, son travail explore les dimensions émotionnelles de la nourriture et de la cuisine et, ce faisant, nous aide à mieux comprendre l’expérience de la migration. Le travail de Whittaker, comme celui de Marta Danylewycz, est ancré dans l’analyse féministe de la vie des femmes. Le maintien des habitudes alimentaires était un moyen important pour les femmes migrantes de conserver des liens avec leur pays d’origine, mais c’était aussi un travail qui ajoutait à la lutte des femmes contre la rupture de la migration. Son travail pose la question suivante : Comment les pratiques culturelles et culinaires ont-elles été perturbées par la migration et quels types de négociations domestiques et de genre ont eu lieu après la migration ? Nous sommes impatientes de nous enrichir de son projet innovant.
