Welcome to the webpages for the CCWH/CCHF conference Edging Forward, Acting Up: Gender and Women’s History at the Cutting Edge of Scholarship and Social Action. The conference will take place from 12 to 15 August 2010 in the beautiful Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue on the downtown campus of Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC. Our program includes sessions on social policy, art history, literature and activism, gender and the law, feminist pedagogy, health and the body, religion and community, and sexuality. Topics cross national boundaries, examining gender and women’s history in Canada, the United States, Japan, and Great Britain. Participants include junior and senior academics, independent scholars, performing and visual artists, public historians, teachers, genealogists, policy makers, and community activists. Our goal is to foster connections not only among scholars but between scholars and community, challenging participants to find ways to link feminist history with activism and to help create societal change through informed social policy. We hope that you will be able to join us!

Please note that we welcome audience participation from the broader community. If you would like to better understand the historical basis of inequality, if you would like to engage with others who are interested in social action and policy creation, please attend and contribute to our discussions. PLENARIES: Special sessions to celebrate the long-term contributions to academia and the broader community of three influential feminist historians, Jean Barman, Andrée Lévesque, and Veronica Strong-Boag.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Ribbon. Dramatic Presentation by Patricia Darbasie, Actor and Playwright, Alberta;

and

“Absence, Silence, Action, and Voice in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.” Presentation by visual artist/activist Pamela Masik and her series “The Forgotten,” with panel discussion on living and working in the DTES by residents, activists, and support providers of the area Jamie Lee Hamilton, Carol Martin, and Irene Tsepnopoulos-Elhaimer.

Bienvenue sur le site Internet du colloque national Innover pour agir : l’histoire des femmes et du genre à l’avant-garde du savoir et de l’action sociale, organisé par le Comité canadien d’histoire des femmes/Canadian Committee on Women’s History. Ce congrès se tiendra au centre-ville de Vancouver, B.C., du 12 au 15 août 2010, au très agréable Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue de l’université Simon Fraser. Notre programme comprend des séances sur les politiques sociales, l’histoire de l’art, la littérature et l’activisme, le genre et la loi, la pédagogie féministe, la santé et le corps, la religion et la collectivité, et la sexualité. Les sujets traités traverseront les frontières en abordant l’histoire des femmes et du genre au Canada, mais aussi aux États-Unis, au Japon et en Grande-Bretagne. La même diversité se retrouve parmi les participantes et participants: membres du corps professoral et enseignant, étudiants et étudiantes à la maîtrise et au doctorat, chercheuses et chercheurs indépendants, artistes de la scène et des arts visuels, historiens et historiennes publics, généalogistes, initiatrices de politiques et militantes de la communauté. Nous espérons que ce colloque encouragera des collaborations interdisciplinaires et rapprochera les universitaires des membres de la collectivité. Nous souhaitons également que les présentations et les discussions permettent de resserrer les liens entre l’histoire du féminisme et le militantisme, et qu’elles contribuent à approfondir des connaissances utiles à l’élaboration de politiques et à l’avènement de changements sociaux.
